THE STREET CHILDREN OF BANGLADESH
The street children of Bangladesh are the evidence of our social injustice and inequality. They don’t have any home or permanent shelter. They sleep beside the street, at the railway platforms, or launch terminals even under the open sky. Gabtoli, Kamlapur, Syedabad, and Sadarghat are some of those places. They don't have parents or relatives. Usually, they are not called upon by their names, rather by the common name 'Tokai' or 'Pichchi'. They roam around in the city in search of livelihood. They don't expect much except some food to satisfy their hunger. For this, they are engaged in different odd jobs. Some of them begin the streets. Some collect rags, papers, plastic bottles, and other thrown-up materials. They are also seen to carry luggage of passengers at the railway stations, bus stands, or launch terminals. They work in mills, factories, or shops. They are low-paid and exploited. They do not get any education or health care facilities. They are the victims of abuse and physical punishment very often for minor offenses. Most of the children have no family identity. They are born and brought up in the streets. Most of them are forsaken by their parents. Some of them have either fathers or mothers. They are deprived of parental love, affection, and care. It is a matter of great regret and shame for the nation. Our government must take proper action for the well-being of our street children.
