POVERTY

Poverty may be defined as such a status of human life when all or some of the basic needs cannot be met properly. Most of the criminal and unlawful activities originate from the womb of poverty. The extent of poverty in Bangladesh is very high. Illiteracy, over-population, limited natural resources, not using scientific methods of cultivation etc. are responsible for poverty. For social harmony and national development, emphasis should be given to poverty alleviation. For example, employment opportunities should be increased in agriculture, livestock, poultry, fishery, horticulture, sericulture, and all other production-oriented sectors. Secondly, Small and cottage industries should be built along with mills, and factories. Again, employment opportunities for agricultural labourers should be created during the off-farming season. And most important, illiteracy should be eradicated and population explosion should be stopped. We must keep in our mind that the poor are the most unproductive creatures of society and thus the burden of the nation. So, a well-planned and combined effort is needed for poverty alleviation.
