Paragraph on 21st February
THE INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
The 21st of February is a memorable day in the history of Bangladesh. This day is also called Shaheed Dibash. On this day in 1952, some brave sons of our soil had sacrificed their lives for the sake of our mother tongue, Bangla. The then Pakistan Government tried to impose Urdu as the state language of Pakistan. This was a blow on our mother tongue, Bengali. So, a huge protest from all around East Pakistan was getting momentum. The military government tried to stop their voice by imposing Section 144 and by banning any kind of meeting or procession. But violating Section 144 some brave sons of our land brought out a procession in the streets of Dhaka. Though it was a peaceful procession, the army opened fire on it. The bullets pierced the hearts of Salam, Rafiq, Jabber, and some others. This incident made the people of East Pakistan agitated and united against the Military Government which was bound to withdraw its decision. Sacrificing life for the cause of one's native language is rare in human history. Considering the significance, UNESCO declared the day as International Mother Language Day in 1999. People of all walks of life observe this day with great honour and solemnity. Men, women, and children get up early in the morning and perform various activities to express their deepest love for the martyrs of the language movement. Throughout the whole day, various kinds of meetings and seminars are held. The 21st of February is an inspiration for Bengali identity and solidarity.
