THE CENTRAL SHAHEED MINAR
The Central Shaheed Minar is located in front of Dhaka Medical College. Hamidur Rahman, one of the most outstanding architects of Bangladesh, gave shape to the concept and design of the Shaheed Minar. The Shaheed Minar bears great significance. It reminds us of the devotion of the martyrs of the language movement. It symbolizes the aspirations of Bangali identity and nationalism. It was first built to make the memory of the martyrs immortal. On February 21, 1952, Salam, Barkat, Jabbar. Rafique and many other unknown people were killed brutally by the Pakistani oppressors near this place when they brought out a procession demanding Bengali as our state language. The Shaheed Minar has been designed to focus the language movement as the principal concept. Its vertical and horizontal forms express the Bangali solidarity and unity for their national identity. The vertical lines suggest the inner strength of the nation and the four columns on both sides of the central structure suggest the balance and harmony of a united stand. The Shaheed Minar thus stands as a symbol of our national hope and inspiration. We really feel proud when we stand before the Shaheed Minar.
