BEGGAR PROBLEM IN BANGLADESH

A beggar is a common sight in every nook and cranny of the urban and rural areas of Bangladesh. There are male and female beggars of various age groups. Wearing torn and dirty clothes a beggar begs from door to door. His / Her existence fully depends on the charity of others. Begging, of course, is a social problem that needs to culminate for a sound atmosphere of a society. Begging provides no contribution to the economy. Rather, it retards progress and prosperity as a whole. The main cause of begging is poverty. In the poverty-stricken Bangladeshi society, it is a difficult thing to eliminate begging, though some sort of remedy can be found if we can take some steps. The important step is to raise a social movement against begging by making people aware of the curse of begging. Simultaneously we have to take steps to engage the beggars, particularly those who are physically strong, in some kind of productive activity so that they can earn their living by honest labour. Those who are disabled or physically incapable of doing any work should be provided with social security. In this regard, the Government of our country can play the leading role.
